through the flower fields
to the ocean
we march together
knowing what lies ahead
we gather our strength
to fight for the generations to come
connecting
learning and teaching
tu y yo
transcending our own borders
to meet face to face
and do what we can to make a difference
about this beautiful
and terrible thing
that keeps you on your side
far away
and neatly divided
from me on mine

hay mucho trabajo que hacer!

walking through the border field state park, past native flowers and grasses swaying gently in the breeze. a deep and beautiful silence that can only be found in a nature relatively untouched by "progress". birds singing, butterflies dancing - what an incredibly beautiful day to be together! to be DOING SOMETHING together. a long and dusty path leading to a beach so serene. deserted. save for a few long-billed dowitchers endlessly chasing and running from the gently flowing waves. a scattered chant here and there to remind us of our purpose. far to the south, a stark and brittle outline, dividing us from them. the fence as it stands today - cutting into the sky, digging deeply into the earth, as rusty and out of place as the rhetoric that seeks to expand it. despite this - there is a moment, long moments, of human connection. warm handshakes, sincere questions and answers from both sides - both learning and teaching. it is a beginning.

These might just be the best pictures I've ever seen on sdimc, maybe even indymedia in general. Thank you, Aymara, for showing us, who are sometimes there, sometimes here, sometimes on both sides of the border, the faces and bodies of those caught in between la frontera.
The words and photos flow together so forcefully, that one cannot but be embraced by the eyes on the other side. Who is the 'other' in these photos? Who constructs who? Is that your arm? Is it mine? What is the position of the one behind the camera in relation to the one in front? All these questions float through my mind as I scroll down your photos.
Although I couldn't be there, I can sense the solidarity, dignity, and compassion between walls.
Hope all can continue to undermine these borders not only separating nations, but separating each other within the same one as well.
Hack the border.

BEAUTIFUL pictures my friend! The rusted monolith that is THE FENCE is so stark against the beauty of the people, and the beach. Why must they shove that thing in such obvious segregation?
Anywayz muy bonita photografia!

Thank you so much for the wonderful coverage of the event. What a beatiful way to emphasize the importance of working together, getting to know each other as people instead of issues. Great photos!
Thank you for all you do!

Why do some of the people have to wear masks like the terrorists? Are they here illeagaly? Are they cowards? I say this to all you losers as soon as one of your loved ones falls victim to your so called "freinds" you will change your tune in an instant.

if a person wants to become a american citizen there are avenues he/she can take to do so. hopping the border is not one of them. a unsecured border is an invitation to terrorist to enter our country with less trouble than they already have. all you hippies are doing is weakening our country. why don't you find a worthwhile cause to fight for. something that will strengthen our nation and not divide it.

Ask the Zapatistas and the Palestinians why they wear masks, as I stand in solidarity with them against neo-liberalism and for their right to stay.
"We will remain faceless because we refuse the spectable of celebrity,
because we are everyone, because the carnival beckons, because the world
is upside down, because we are everywhere. By wearing masks we show that
who we are is not as important as what we want, and what we want is
everything for everyone."

were banned by the city government

Tommy,
I would like you to map out these avenues you speak of. It is a bit more complicated than asking for some documents. "Weakening our country"????? Tommy, do you eat fruit/vegetables/virtually any produce at any market? The contribution that Latino immigrants make to the United States' system is hardly equivalent to whatever "negative" it is that you claim is weakening the system. And produce is just the obvious example. And whoever stated that once an immigrant commits some crime against one of "us" personally that our tune will change...that is just blatent racism. If we are going to evict and prohibit murderers and thieves based on their ethnicity then this is going to be an uninhabited land. I suppose after 9/11 you were out beating up anyone who looked Middle Eastern?

I hope that one day we will no longer be divided, and that the wall and all the the ugliness that it represents will be nothing more than an embarrassing memory. I also hope that the people who don't understand and say ignorant things about immigration do some research and learn that US economic policies have caused this tragedy, forcing people to risk their lives to come to the US to escape the devastating poverty we helped to create in Mexico.

Mexicans have endured over 100 years of racist immigration policies. George Bush's plan for a legal work force is a continuation of that racism that does not allow for a path towards citizenhip. Workers are used and abused without a chance to secure the American dream. It is an American Wet Dream for the dark-skined immigrants. ALL Europeans were allowed citizenship. They were not sent back after a few years of cheap labor. Allow Mexicans the same opportunity as the Europeans.
When legal resident Mexicans were forced back to Mexico during the mid to late 1800's, Europeans were encouraged to come settle these same lands. There were no minutemen blocking the European migration. There were no time limits on how long they could stay in the USA. It is time to stop the racism and treat dark-skinned immigrants the same as the European immigrants were treated.
There needs to be a sane immigration policy. Building walls and succumbing to racist fears are not components for any sane immigration policy.
